Yasmin is a combined oral contraceptive pill used to prevent pregnancy. It contains two active hormones: drospirenone (a progestogen) and ethinylestradiol (an oestrogen). Yasmin works by preventing the release of an egg from the ovaries (ovulation), thickening cervical mucus to make it harder for sperm to reach the egg, and thinning the lining of the uterus to prevent implantation. In addition to its use as a contraceptive, Yasmin may help regulate menstrual cycles, reduce period pain, and improve skin conditions like acne in some users.

Description

What is Yasmin?

Yasmin is a combined oral contraceptive pill used to prevent pregnancy. It contains two active hormones: drospirenone (a progestogen) and ethinylestradiol (an oestrogen). Yasmin works by preventing the release of an egg from the ovaries (ovulation), thickening cervical mucus to make it harder for sperm to reach the egg, and thinning the lining of the uterus to prevent implantation. In addition to its use as a contraceptive, Yasmin may help regulate menstrual cycles, reduce period pain, and improve skin conditions like acne in some users.

How Does Yasmin Work?

Yasmin works by altering the body’s natural hormonal cycle. The combination of drospirenone and ethinylestradiol stops ovulation, meaning an egg is not released from the ovaries. Additionally, it thickens the mucus in the cervix, making it difficult for sperm to enter the uterus. Lastly, Yasmin thins the lining of the womb (endometrium), reducing the likelihood of implantation. Yasmin is typically taken once daily for 21 consecutive days, followed by a 7-day pill-free break during which a withdrawal bleed occurs. When taken correctly, Yasmin is over 99% effective at preventing pregnancy.

2. Can Yasmin help with acne?

Yes, Yasmin may help improve mild to moderate acne by regulating hormones that cause breakouts. Consult your doctor to see if it is appropriate for you.
