Proctosedyl Ointment

• Not suitable for prolonged use without medical supervision.
• Do not use on broken or infected skin without consulting a healthcare provider.
• Avoid if you have any sexually transmitted illnesses. 
• This medicine contains wool fat (lanolin) which may cause local skin reactions such as contact dermatitis.
• Contact dermatitis causes redness, itching or irritation of the skin.
• Always use Proctosedyl ointment exactly as your doctor has told you. You should check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure.
• You should see your doctor before use if you are allergic to any of the active ingredients in this medication.
• This ointment may be unsuitable if you are pregnant, thinking of becoming pregnant, or think you may be pregnant.  Consult your doctor for advice.
• This product is not suitable to order or use if you are currently breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed.
• Always read the patient information leaflet provided with the medication for a full list of side effects and contraindications.

Only use under the guidance of your medical provider or if you have consulted the instructions. 

• Wash your hands before applying.
• Squeeze a small amount of the ointment onto your fingertip.
• Gently rub a small layer of ointment over the sore, painful or itching area.
• For internal piles, use the applicator provided to gently apply a small amount of ointment just inside the back passage, following the instructions supplied with the product.
• Wash your hands.
• Only apply proctosedyl to your back passage and the surrounding painful areas.
• Do not use this ointment on other parts of the body.
• Apply this medicine in the morning, evening and after each bowel movement.
• Do not use Proctosedyl for longer than seven days unless your doctor advises you to do so.
• Clean the applicator thoroughly after every use to maintain hygiene and prevent infection.

Proctosedyl contains two active ingredients:

• Cinchocaine hydrochloride - a local anaesthetic that helps relieve pain, itching and discomfort.
• Hydrocortisone - a mild corticosteroid that helps reduce inflammation, swelling and irritation.

The ointment base helps soothe and protect the affected area.  The other ingredients are:

• Wool fat (lanolin)
• Liquid paraffin
• Soft white paraffin

Always check the ingredients list before use, especially if you have known allergies.

Like all other medicines, Proctosedyl may cause some side effects. If you experience side effects, they may include:

• Skin rash, redness or irritation at the application site.
• Thinning of the skin, especially with prolonged use.
• Adrenal suppression, lack of concentration, a feeling of hunger, nervousness and fits.

In rare cases, some patients experience blurred vision or other changes in eyesight.  Possible allergic reactions may include swelling, itching, severe rash or difficulty breathing.  If you experience severe side effects, contact your healthcare provider. 

1. How often should I use Proctosedyl Ointment?

Apply a small amount to the affected area two to three times a day, usually in the morning, evening and after bowel movements, or as directed by your doctor.

2. Can I use Proctosedyl Ointment for internal hemorrhoids?

Yes, it can be applied internally using the applicator provided with the ointment.  Follow the instructions carefully and apply gently just inside the back passage.

3. How long does it take to work?

Symptom relief may begin within a few days, but it is important to complete the full course as prescribed.  If symptoms do not improve or worsen after seven days, seek medical advice.

4. Is Proctosedyl safe during pregnancy?

Consult your doctor before using Proctosedyl during pregnancy or while breastfeeding, as it may not be suitable for everyone.

5. What if I miss a dose?

Apply the missed dose as soon as you remember, unless it is nearly time for your next dose, but do not double up doses to make up for a missed one.

6. How long can I use Proctosedyl for?

Do not use Proctosedyl for longer than seven days unless advised to do so by a healthcare professional, as prolonged use may increase the risk of side effects.

7. Can I use Proctosedyl on other parts of the body?

No, Proctosedyl should only be used on the back passage and surrounding area.  It should not be applied to other parts of the body.

8. What should I do if my symptoms do not improve?

If your symptoms do not improve after seven days, or if they become worse, stop using the ointment and consult your doctor.

9. Can Proctosedyl be used by children?

Proctosedyl is not usually recommended for children unless specifically advised by a doctor.  Always seek medical advice before use.

10. Are there any signs that I should stop using Proctosedyl immediately?

Stop using Proctosedyl and seek medical advice if you experience signs of an allergic reaction, such as severe irritation, swelling, rash, difficulty breathing or changes in vision.
