Metronidazole 400mg tablets are a type of antibiotic. The drug works by killing excess bacteria in the teeth, vagina, or stomach to relieve the burning pain. How Does Metronidazole Work?

Common bacterial infections occur when there is an imbalance of the PH of the environment. For instance, changes in the vaginal PH causes trichomoniasis, while changes in PH of the mouth cause tooth infections. Metronidazole works by killing the excess bacteria that cause the imbalance. It returns the environment to normal, thus eliminating tooth pain, vaginal itching, and an odor that comes with the infections.

Patients with the conditions below should avoid Metronidazole:

  • If you have or have ever had a liver problem.
  • If you are having kidney dialysis.
  • If you suffer from a disease of the nervous system.
  • If you are pregnant, planning to be pregnant, or breastfeeding.
  • If you are on other medication.

Tell your doctor if you are scheduled for surgery, including dental surgery, before taking Metronidazole.

Directions for Using Metronidazole

  • Metronidazole is an oral drug.
  • Swallow one tablet twice daily for seven days.
  • Always ensure that you complete the course, even if you think your symptoms have improved.
  • You should not drink alcohol during your period of taking Metronidazole tablets, and for 48 hours afterward.

Ingredients of Metronidazole

The active ingredient in this medicine is Metronidazole 400mg. The other ingredients are Croscarmellose Sodium, Cellulose, Colloidal Silica, Lactose, Magnesium Stearate, Maize Starch, Polyethylene Glycol, Titanium Dioxide (E171), Hydroxypropylcellulose (E463), and Methylhydroxypropylcellulose (E464).

This treatment is generally well tolerated by most people. Common side effects when taking Metronidazole tables include:

  • Numbness, tingling, pain, or a feeling of weakness in the arms or legs.
  • Unpleasant taste in the mouth.
  • Furry tongue.
  • Nausea, vomiting, stomach upset, or diarrhoea.
  • Loss of appetite.
  • Fever.
  • Feeling depressed.
  • Pain in your eyes (optic neuritis).
